Book Reccomendations for Beginers

Filed under: Books — Loki @ 5:36 pm

With the large growth of wiccan-or-witch/">Wicca and Witchcraft finding a teacher may seem hard or downright impossible. While having a teacher to give us hands on experience may be the best bet for most of us that scenario is not always possible. The next avenue to learning The Craft is reading and research. Even with a teacher books can help to cement the hands on experience. Most teachers will usually require reading along with teaching.

I thought I would put together a few reading suggestions to help people interested and new to The Craft to get started.

A standard staring place for most Solitary practitioners is “wiccan-or-witch/">Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary practitioner” by Scott Cunningham. Scott Cunningham helped to get wiccan-or-witch/">Wicca on the Religious map, so to speak. This book is a Great start for anyone interested in perusing the Goddess. After finishing this book many continue with “Living wiccan-or-witch/">Wicca.” This book is also written by Scott Cunningham and is a follow up, the second part of his Solitary wiccan-or-witch/">Wicca writings.

Ray Buckland’s “Complete book of Witchcraft is another classic often recommended to new craft members. This book gives a good overall view of the craft for both Solitary and Craft practitioners. Starhawks’s “Spiral Dance and Marion Weinstein’s “Practical Magic” are also on most practioner’s must read list.

Christopher Penczak has two books that are both geared for a year and a day practice. Both these books are meant to be textbooks, that is study books. They have much to offer someone that is serious and has been unable to find a teacher. His first book, “The Inner Temple of Witchcraft” is a teaching guide for the beginnings of the craft helping the student with learning the most important part of magick and ritual, themselves. This book covers the basics of belief. His second book ‘’’The Outer temple of Witchcraft” covers the workings of The Craft including Casting Circles and putting together rituals. After completing both these (suggested time is 2 years) one will have a good, well rounded, working knowledge of The Craft that would equal most hands on relationships.

Diane Sylvan’s book “The Circle Within” deals with the personal spirituality behind wiccan-or-witch/">Wicca. This book emphasizes the daily living of Wiccan and developing personal relationships with Themselves, with the goddess and with the God.

Three good books about the inner workings of Magick are Amber K’s “True Magick” and Nancy Watson’s “Practical Solitary Magic.” Scott Cunningham has two books written directly concerning Folk and Sympathetic Magic: “Earth Power and Earth, Air, Fire and Water.”

Ann Moura has a great 5 book series on Green Witchcraft.

A few good books for those interested in Coven practice are Stewart and Janet Farrar’s “A Witches Bible” and Amber K’s “Coven Craft.”

This is just a small list of books filled with great information that are easy accessible to anyone wanting to learn The Craft. It is hard for us to fathom that just 30 years ago this information was almost impossible to find. Through research, perseverance and practice new people can learn much that used to be only available through a teacher or a working Coven.
